'Westminster'

In this atmospheric photograph by Andrew Kidd, the impressive structures of the  Houses of Parliment and Westminster Bridge can be seen from across the River Thames. These are just two of the famous landmarks found in the culturally significant Westminster area of London which also includes Buckingham Palace, Westminster Cathedral and Trafalgar Square.

Set against a brooding sky, the distinctive sandy stonework of the Houses of Parliment's stunningly intricate facade emits a warm glow. Designed by architect Charles Barry in a Gothic Revival style, Westminster Palace,  as it's also known, is the main centre of political life in the United Kingdom. The palace has been a Grade I listed building since 1970 and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
